How to Renew Your Licence for Purpose of Use 1
Categories are the types of firearms you own (A, B, C, D, H) and the purposes of having that firearm are the numbers next to the letters, (1 to 12). The definitions can be found on the back of your firearms licence or in the firearms act and regulations.
If you have a 1 next to any of the categories (A, B, C, D, H), it means you need to show you are an active member of a club when you renew your licence.
The instructions below go through the process for renewing your licence for A, B and H, purpose of use 1, at SSAA Para.
Long Arms (A,B)
Long arms licences are valid for 1, 2, 3, or 5 years.
If you hold an A1 and/or B1 licence (without a handgun category), you no longer need to provide an external club certificate (chit) when renewing your SAPOL licence.
Instead, you can renew your licence at Australia Post or Service SA using only the SAPOL renewal paperwork.
Handguns (H)
Handgun licences (H1) are valid for 1, 2, or 3 years and require proof of active club participation to be attached to the licence renewal (Chit).
Club Certificate (Chit) Requirement
To renew an H1 licence, you must obtain a club certificate (chit) confirming your active membership for each year of the licence.
Chits are issued by club signatories most weekends and some Thursdays. If you cannot attend during these times, contact the club secretary.
It is recommended that you complete this process a few weeks before your licence expires.
Shooting Participation Requirements
Over the 12 months before renewal, members must participate in at least six (6) organised competitive shooting matches, with attendance recorded. Matches must be scheduled club events listed on the calendar.
Handgun Categories and Shooting Requirements:
- Category 1 – Air or gas-operated handguns
- Category 2 – .22 rimfire handguns
- Category 3 – Centre-fire handguns up to .38 caliber
- Category 4 – Handguns over .38 caliber
If you own handguns in multiple categories, you must complete four (4) shoots per category.
Examples:
- Member A: No handguns but holds an H1 licence – must complete six (6) shoots in any category.
- Member B: Owns a .22-caliber handgun – must complete six (6) Category 2 shoots.
- Member C: Owns two .22-caliber handguns and a .45-caliber handgun – must complete four (4) Category 2 shoots and four (4) Category 4 shoots.
When obtaining your club external chit, you must provide:
Proof of participation in the required number of shoots (recorded on an internal chit by the club captain).
Your current Firearms Licence.
Your Para membership card.
Your SSAA membership card.
Steps:
Ensure your attendance is recorded using the yellow cards available in the canteen.
Obtain an internal chit from the club captain, confirming your participation.
Present the internal chit to a club signatory to receive an external chit.
Attach the external chit to your SAPOL licence renewal paperwork.
By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth renewal process for your firearms licence at SSAA Para.
